Ha! Huh?

Yeah, I saw Bridesmaids. Of course I did. It’s a comedy. That makes fun of people and weddings and feelings. We all like to make fun of that stuff. And yeah. I identified with certain elements of the protagonist in a way that some might find disturbing, but so what? Also, and this is really important, this movie was a test. It is supposed to prove that women are funny, which is funny, because women are funny. So, that was easy. I’m glad that controversy is over.
Oh wait. It probably isn’t.
In a chapter on women being funny/not funny (like, why the hell do we keep having to address this issue, for reals) of Tina Fey’s book, Bossypants, she makes a point of mentioning that she can’t diss Christopher Hitchens for his misogyny on this topic because he’s dying. Which I guess is admirable for some reason, but since she is so nice I’ll do it for her.
Dear Hitch,
You are also, and very often, not funny, especially when you think you are. Your whole deal is that you are a contrarian, so logically, women must be extremely funny to most of the population since you want to live in a world were everyone opposes you. Nice try. Your thesis was shitty.
Stay lame,
DDB
Also, I recently watched an HBO special, Talking Funny, in which four comedians (Louis C.K., Ricky Gervais, Chris Rock and Jerry Seinfeld) discussed and dissected comedy to varying degrees of interest. While I appreciate that people now take comedy seriously as something that is hard to do and requires work (shocker) it was frustrating to see that four men were the subjects. I imagine in the future there could be a second special, and that women might be included. However, I’m sure that instead of talking purely about comedy, writing, creation and what’s funny, there would be talk of being a female comedian. The entire time.
Here is the deal: some things are funny (Bridesmaids for example) and some things are not. And I know, this is subjective, for rizzle. So, let’s just focus on judging comedy and comedians based on the hilarious, or not so much, stuff they produce and waaaaaaay less on if they have penises or vaginas etc. Mostly because, like “my wife/husband ruins my life” jokes, that conversation isn’t funny, it’s boring and played out. Poop jokes are still totally cool though.
